60 x 60: Sixty Prints from the Purdue University Galleries biennial “Sixty Square Inches” Exhibition and Lisa Bloomfield: Stories from Home, Digital Ink Jet Prints

A conversation with the artist Lisa Bloomfield will be held in the University Art Gallery on September 30 at 6:30 p.m.

“60 x 60,” is a traveling exhibition consisting of 60 prints acquired from previous Sixty Square Inches competitions. The prints were made using a variety of printmaking techniques, including with each image measuring less than 60 square inches in size. Accompanying the exhibition will be a display of various printmaking media to illustrate the methods used by contemporary printmakers.  “60 x 60” was developed by the Purdue University Galleries, West Lafayette, Indiana.
Lisa Bloomfield: Stories from Home will feature thirty-five of Los Angeles artist Lisa Bloomfield’s digital prints and books which include brilliantly colored, complex and elegant images reflecting local events and the artist’s personal narrative.

An exhibition featuring forty works of art by two contemporary artists from Los Angeles who work with the figure in two and three dimensions.  On display will be artist Tiiu Ashcraft’s large scale graphite drawings of nudes and Russell McMillin’s fantastic mixed media figures (primarily ceramic) “Power”, “Culture”, “Icon” covered in armor and dressed in corsets.

The Veil: Visible and Invisible Spaces

An exhibition of fifty works of art by contemporary women artists, each of whom considers the Veil, its many manifestations and interpretations and puts veils and veiling into context.  Visible and Invisible Spaces will be divided into three categories to be interpreted widely: The Sacred Veil; The Sensuous Veil, and the Sociopolitical Veil.  The curator, Jennifer Heath, editor of the companion book, The Veil: Women Writers on its History, Lore, and Politics, invited visual artists-including videographers, filmmakers and new media artists, as well as painters, sculptors, performance and installation artists-from around the world to investigate and re-vision the veil.


Art of Ink: Traditional and Contemporary Calligraphy

March 17 – April 21, 2010

A calligraphy demonstration by Shantien Tom Chow, 6:30 p.m., March 17, University Art Gallery
An exhibition of 30 large-scale works by contemporary calligraphers curated by Dr. Sun Wuk Kim, Joseph Hwang and Shantien Tom Chow of the Association of International Calligraphy Arts, and Juliann Wolfgram, an expert in Asian Art.  The scrolls on display will highlight both traditional and contemporary methods with an emphasis on lyrical abstraction by local and international artists.  Also on display in the gallery will be 20 carved calligraphic seals and their respective images.
