Fall 2009 NEWS

Spring 2010: Change to Course Requirement for the History/Social Science Single Subject Preparation Program
The History/Social Science single subject program requires students to complete 45 hours of classroom observation. We have been using HIS 306 to accomplish this function. Students were required to enroll in HIS 306 and 305 in the same semester to meet the requirement. Beginning in Spring 2010, students will enroll in UNV 300 instead of HIS 306, but will still enroll concurrently in HIS 305. Click here for more information.

GEO 360 and the Single Subject Program
One of the History/Social Science Single Subject course requirements is GEO 360: North America. This course is normally offered in the Spring term, but for several reasons was bumped this coming year to Fall 2010. If you plan to graduate in Spring 2010, talk to the Earth Sciences Department Chair, Professor Ralph Saunders, to set up an Independent Study Geography course in Spring 2010. His contact info: Email: rsaunders@csudh.edu, Office: NSM B-206, Phone: 310-243-3284. Note that this is ONLY for students graduating in Spring. If you aren't graduating until Fall 2010 or later, you must take the regular course when it is offered.

History Major - Education Option
History/Social Science Single Subject Matter Credential Preparation Program

If you're interested in teaching History and Social Science in middle school, junior high school, or senior high school, this program is designed for you. It prepares you to enter directly from your B.A. into a post-graduate credential program leading to a single subject matter authorization in History/Social Science. You'll take a number of History courses (equivalent to the standard major in history at CSUDH), as well as courses in geography, political science, economics, and philosophy. The program satisfies the requirements set by the California State Commission on Teacher Credentialing for demonstrating substantive preparation in the subject matter field of social science.

You enter this program by signing up for the B.A. in History - Education Option. Print out and follow the History Major-Education Option advising worksheet (download here). See the list of required courses at the bottom of this page. The 75 units includes a number of lower-division courses, so if you are transferring from a community college you may have already completed some of these courses. Meet with the History/Social Science SSMPP Advisor (bring copies of your community college transcripts) during your first semester at CSUDH to check this out. Note that no lower-division course may be substituted for any upper-division course--no exceptions.England

Completion of an approved subject matter preparation program or passing comprehensive examinations in the subject matter field (the CSET test) fulfills one part of the requirements leading to the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Science.

UNV 300 Information
All students in the current History/Social Science Single Subject Matter prep program must take UNV 300: Early Field Experience. We offer the course every Spring semester. If you plan to enroll in this course, click here for information about this course, including the requirements for enrolling (including co-requisite, a TB test and fingerprinting). The current Single Subject prep program requires that UNV 300 be taken concurrently with HIS 305 (unless you completed HIS 305 prior to Fall 2007). NOTE: UNV 300 replaces the former HIS 306 requirement.

History/Social Science SSMPP NEWS
May, 2009: Beginning Fall 2009, the History/Social Science SSMPP will become a formal Major Option within the History Department. That means that students in this program who are currently History majors will need to change their major to the Bachelor of Arts, History Education Option once this new option is established on the CSUDH database. We will update this web page with instructions once you can enroll in this option. Students new to CSUDH should declare as History majors for now.

CSUDH 2042 Preliminary History-Social Science Subject Matter Program
Commission Approved June 2007

The new program is in response to changing requirements by the State of California. It requires only 5 units more than did the pre-June 2007 program (75 versus 70). The changes are otherwise significant. The new program features a big increase in History units and the elimination of units in Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology. In many cases it allows fewer options for satisfying various requirements. No lower-division course may be substituted for any upper-division course. This prohibition is absolute.
